TEASER (CREATION)

The origins of DOERS was  Julie Nioche’s interest in Lisa Nelson’s life as well as her way of making art brought her to discover PA RT, created with Steve Paxton in 1978. The choices of these artists who chose to work outside the regular American creative & performance networks, working with nature, with an improvised movement vocabulary – all resonated for Nioche. She was also struck by the apparent simplicity of their danced encounters. She noted the power of their repeating dances, re‑oxygenated by certain sensations, precise rules of engagement, as well as the thoughts presented during these encounters. They called themselves, literally -- “doers.”

They act by dancing, simply sharing their knowledge and their practices.

What is the relevance of this work today, from artistic, personal, political and societal points of view? How do we pick up on and absorb someone else’s movements? And how do these movements affect our most secret convictions? 

DOERS is the starting point for PODERE, a polymorphic project which Julie Nioche began developing in 2020, and which will run until 2024. Podere in secular Latin means “being able.” It is manifested in various dance structures, showing the power of collective actions, asking the question: “What are we capable of doing? What can dance do?”
